At 4500', Gold Butte Lookout is a closer alternative, 110 miles 2.5 hours. It has less open space and probably allows fewer people the best viewing. The last half mile is a walk over "difficult and steep terrain." I'm not sure they would let me drive the Tacoma to the top. Google Maps It's about 2.6 miles north of the center of the totality path. If we settle on it, I'll go there at least a day before to scout it out. Here's a Gold Butte topo map.
